The Kootenay River is one of Western Canada’s jewels. Starting high in the Canadian Rocky Mountains the Kootenay is one of the headwaters for the Columbia river. The crystal clear blue water runs swiftly over glacier till through a deep mountain valley. This trip features:
Fantastic Mountain scenery
Wildlife viewing featuring Bald Eagles, Kokanee salmon, sand pipers, deer, elk and bears
The river hosts flatwater floating to bouncy whitewater rapids.
Beautiful side Waterfalls, including the famous Pedley falls.
River Trip distance 85 km
Itinerary:
Aug 14 Arrive at Crook Meadows Campground
Aug 15 Set up boats at the Put In (Settlers Road Bridge), arrange car shuttle, Push off and start paddling.
Aug 16 Day 2 on the river.
Aug 17 Day 3 We will paddle to the take out at Canal Flats by early afternoon. Say our
goodbyes and head home.

Fee does not include:
Park entry fee
Shuttle fee (shuttle options will be discussed later depending on numbers)
Pre-requisites:
participants must have prior experience paddling class 2 rivers
Strong eddy turn and ferry skills
Backcountry camping experience
OR
- take the Rocky Mountain Paddling Centre Tandem River canoe course

The payment of fees are broken up as follows; minimum $250.00 cdn non-refundable to reserve your spot by June 15th 2023. Further payment of $794.75(remaining $745 + GST) cdn by July 15th, 2023

- 3 day canoe trip on the Kootenay River from Settlers Road bridge to Canal Flats

- The Kootenay River is an intermediate level paddle that requires the ability to perform eddy turns well and be proficient at ferry skills. Backcountry camping skills is also necessary

Season	Summer to Fall is the best and most predictable paddling season for clear water.

I went on a kayak trip in early September, 2022 and needed to upgrade some of my gear. I replaced my old rain gear with custom fit Spirit West SwitchBack jacket and pants. The fabric seems to be very similar to my Arcteryx coat but it's much quieter. The hood worked perfectly and was stiff enough that I didn't need a baseball cap. We had a several days of wind and rain and the coat and pants worked flawlessly. It's so comfortable that I'll be able to wear it around town too.
